Ambitions for 2006

Happy New Year!

As I write this I’m in the middle of the End of Year stuff and have a little down time, so I thought I would post my ambitions for the New Year for the world to see. I’m calling them ambitions instead of resolutions, because I generally think of resolutions as something you plan on changing, or something you say when you really don’t want to do something but feel you have to. Ambitions on the other hand are things that you want to do. More like goals.

2006 Ambitions:

  • Quit Smoking – I know… usually a resolution, but by definition above it becomes an Ambition. With the edelet on the way, it’s gotta be done.
  • More posts here and at SuperGeekBlog – I’ve done pretty good for 1 post a day here, but my averages at both are well below that. I would ideally like to get to at least 2 a day, but the free time just isn’t there.
  • More links to Thatedeguy and SuperGeekBlog – Right now, both sites are hovering(read: stagnating) at about 12-14 links from individual sites. I would love to see that climb to at least the 50-60 range. If anyone would like to throw up a link to Thatedeguy or SuperGeekBlog I would appreciate it. And I’ll do my best to return the favor.
  • Increase traffic to Thatedeguy and SuperGeekBlog – Right now, Thatedeguy sits somewhere between 25-35 unique hits a day and SGB is at somewhere around 35-50. Obviously, I would love to see both in the 10k unique a day area, but would definetely settle for the 300-500 area by the end of the year.
  • Increase personal revenue – At the moment I have a real job along with a burgeoning family and Thatedeguy and SGB and doing a little bit of hobbyist stuff on Ebay. I’d really like to take fullest advantage of my revenue capabilities so that I can enjoy what little free time I have. Hell, at this point I haven’t made enough off of Adsense on Thatedeguy to even believe I’ll see a check from them until 2007.
  • Venture – I have a few ventures that I’m currently working on, some announced and some not. Distro of the Month being the announced one and another that is still in funding. If anybody out there has a few extra bucks out there and want to make a few off of it, drop me a line. I can give you the gist of it and maybe we can work something out. I can be contacted at admin {AT} thatedeguy {DOT} com.

Well, it’s a short list, but a broad list. I didn’t feel that I should waste too much time on getting to specific as most people will be bright enough to fill in the blanks. Or so I assume anyways.

Added Note:Darren at Problogger.net seems to have read my mind as I just noticed that he posted a open post about what other bloggers have set as goals and resolutions for the new year. Fits right in with the theme of this post.

Happy New Year again.

Reflections on 2005

Darren over at Problogger.net posted a end of the year summary for Problogger and gave me a little inspiration to do my own.

When I began this blog in early August (prompted by a visit to Problogger.net oddly enough) of this year, I had very little idea what I was getting into. Darren makes it sound so easy. The learning curve for doing this on your own domain and doing all of your own administration is pretty steep. I’m a techie, so that helps.

I still don’t have the most clear of directions for thatedeguy.com, but it’s beginning to form. I’m now averaging about 30 unique hits a day. More, depending on which stats engine you use. I’ve been hosting this site with GoDaddy since September and the stats engine they use is slightly less than I could have hoped for. I’ve been using the free service from statcounter.com and have been very happy with it. The thing I like most is the ability to create a blocking cookie so that my own visits don’t count as hits.

I managed to switch over to feedburner for my feeds so that I could keep a little closer track of the subscriber count and have honestly been pleasantly surprised. After just one day, the count stands at 9 with only 2 of them being my own machines. 7 other subscriptions is quite nice for only 5 months. It doesn’t really compare with the rapid rise of a site the likes of Techcrunch, but thatedeguy is nowhere near as focused as Techcrunch either.

Overall, I’d say that it has been a quick 5 months, and now that most of the learning curve is done, I expect to make lots of improvements in 2006.

Make sure that you read Darren’s little announcement at the end of that post. He’s gonna be a daddy too. Congratulations Darren.

Hooked on Memeorandum

I can’t help myself. I find myself drawn to Memeorandum several times a day. It’s the immediacy of having the newest top info at the tips of my fingers and seeing the conversation in Cyberspace represented. While I must admit that I don’t visit the politics side of it very often, the tech side has me enrapt. I’ve even lessened my addiction to Digg.

Take a look and see if the same doesn’t happen to you.

WordPress Feedburner Plugin Hack

I’ve finally switched my feeds here over to feedburner. I like having the stats. I’m a stats junkie. I found a nifty WordPress Feedburner plugin that takes care of most of the dirty work for you, but of course anytime I do anything with this site, there were problems.

At first feedburner wouldn’t recognize any of the changes. After much detective work, I’ve discovered that the main problem the whole time was installing WordPress into a directory instead of on the root. The plugin doesn’t do a very good job of seeing that and making any changes.

The first thing I had to do was a little PHP editing. If your not comfortable doing this, well, you might want to consider finding a different way to send your feeds. Basically, you have to edit the plugin file and .htaccess so it’s not for the technically uninclined.
