PayScale, a salary/wage comparison engine website, offers to take some information about your current pay/job and compare it to others in your job description and area. Pretty interesting idea really. The more people that use it, the more accurate it will become. Of course that doesn’t exactly bode well for me as North Dakotans are not exactly known for being on the cutting edge.
I did however use the site and I have to admit, it asks some fairly in depth questions about a persons current job.
When it was all said and done, I found myself a little dissapointed with my current pay. Of course it was only comparing my pay and position to 11 others in the region and because of pay differences between my area and some of the larger metro areas around here, it could be rather skewed. Even if that is the case, according to PayScale, I’m being under paid by at least $10,000 a year and shorted by about 1.5 weeks of vacation.
I’m not going to go and demand a raise based on the calculations of this website as there are some obvious variables that make my comparison a little tweaked. It’s still nice to know the range of pay for my position.
Give PayScale a try. Let me know how it turns out for you. I’d be especially interested if you live in a small population area like I do(15,000 pop.) and also if it finds you grossly overpaid.
It also has an employer side which I can only assume gives the range of pay so that companies can compete on the salary end of things.
