Knock, Knock

Who’s there? Winter.

We got nailed yesterday. Just under 9 inches or so. I’ll try and get some pictures on Flickr, but probably not going to happen until either late today or tomorrow sometime.

My wife is stuck in Fargo at the moment with our son, so still trying to figure out a way to get there. I don’t think I can get either of our cars unstuck enough to get to the interstate. The silly town apparently doesn’t plow on the weekend. Not to mention that it’s a holiday weekend. I haven’t seen anything but a 4 wheel drive go by the house yet this morning.

Should be all kinds of fun.

Ruminations on the year past

For each year that Thatedeguy has been around I’ve done a goals post and a predictions post for the coming year.  Since I only began in August of 2005, there really wasn’t much for that before 2005.  So, last year I didn’t get to do a reflection on where each of those went.  So, now I can.

If you’re curious, you can read the original posts, I’ll link them at the top of the list.

Ambitions for 2006

  • Quit Smoking.  Well, I struggled with it for most of the year and it became a little more important with the coming of Connor.  I haven’t bought a pack in several weeks and have only had about 3 in that time.  It’s not quit, but it is quitting.
  • More posts.  Well.  No advancement on that front really.
  • More Links.  I asked for 50-60 and as of right now, technorati is reporting 214!!!  I’d say I blew this one out of the water.
  • Increase Traffic.  Nope.  Same ol’, Same ol’.  That is in part due to the addition of two blogs in 2006 to my fledgling one man network.
  • Increase revenue.  Again, a goal that I blew out of the water.  I certainly haven’t made myself rich, but I went from not expecting a check from adsense to getting two in 2006.  Not bad.
  • Venture.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained.  Well, my ventures went kerplunk.  Well, except for DOTM which really hasn’t gone anywhere at all.

Predictions for 2006

  • Google. I got the one major purchase bit right, just not the who.(YouTube)  I also failed on the stock drop prediction.  It’s actually stayed pretty steady throughout the year.
  • Microsoft.  They’ve become a little more proactive in the new web, but really not as much as I expected.  There won’t be any chance for them to leak any products after the office and vista releases as they got pushed back to 2007.
  • Apple.  I think I nailed this one.  The iPod is still the biggest thing going and the Intel switch didn’t do much at all.  A slight up tick directly afterwards and then back to normal.
  • Generalizations. Nailed and nailed.  The blogosphere did indeed slow down in the third quarter and the web 2.0 wave has slowed considerably.  At least with companies making big splashes.

Overall, 2006 was a pretty good year.  I’m hoping for a better year in 2007, but 2006 wasn’t all bad.

Copy the list, post the list, add your own favorites. Eventually the list will get huger (I’m aware that’s not a word) and cumbersome and unwieldy. And we’ll all forget about it. But those of us who play along might just get a few extra links out of the deal.  P.s. Blogtrepreneur is playing along, albeit with a different list than mine…

Microsoft gets generous

In case you missed it, Microsoft, AMD, and Edelman sent out a bunch of Acer Ferrari laptops.  Unfortunately, they seem to have missed me on the list.  There’s quite a bit of uproar about MS paying for reviews of Vista and now they don’t want the original recipient to keep the laptop.  Little silly if you ask me.  You can read a bit more on it at the Techmeme archive, but I’m not going to try and link them all here.

Scoble thinks it’s a great idea and so do I.  It’s no different from Cell companies handing out phones to press and bloggers.  Probably the biggest problem that it is running into is the transparency of the  blogosphere.  If it were still old media, that transparency wouldn’t exist and nobody would have said anything about getting a laptop from Microsoft.  But us bloggers have a little pride and want to be transparent.   Somebody said something about a laptop from Microsoft in the mail and all of a sudden, every one is a leper or some such.

Well, in an effort to alleviate some of that, I’m offering to take as many of the Acer laptops in as people will sell me.  I’ll liquidate all but the first one on eBay or Craigslist or somewhere and donate the proceeds to a later chosen charity.  If I get more than one laptop, we’ll have a poll here to decide on a charity for the proceeds.

So, what’ya say?  You can use the Contact form here to get my mailing address.
