So a quick question for you folks out there. Do you prefer websites/blogs with headers? Without headers? Does it matter? For instance, this site does not have a “proper” header. The name of the site is off to the top of the left sidebar but there is no header to speak of.
What do you think? Is a header necessary?

I would say that if nothing else perhaps a thin header along the top to start the page off and just contain a slightly larger site name. Doesn’t have to be large, 50px in height if that.

I think that even though this site does not employ a header like that, that it is exactly what I would like to see in a site. That and a few other troubles with the theme make me want to make a change yet again.

What I detest are sites that have a massive banner ad either as or immediately below the header. I like to see the information I came to the site for.
Useful headers could contain navigation and logo eg Google, but that takes little away from the main reason for visiting the site.
The important thing is to retain critical information to grab visitors attention well above the fold, and to make it visually obvious as to where it is. (On your site it’s obvious, it’s in the middle… that’s all I need to know) 🙂
