Hrmm... I don't think I've ever visited any of the "big name" bloggers that I can remember. Perhaps accidentally... I do visit Will Wheaton's blog which probably gets nearly as many hits and doesn't generate income for the most part. I try to avoid any blogger that gets an enormous ego from their readership since my ego is far far larger than they can ever hope. ;)

Some excellent advice here. However, you can make substantial amounts from your blog, if you forget trying to make money from the blog itself. Few people, as you say, make $500 a month from their blog. But that's because they are focusing their efforts on monetising their blog with adverts and affiliate links. However, my blog makes me substantially more than $500 a month because I use it to enhance my reputation as an expert in my field. What this does is attract companies and organisations who want my knowledge. Without my blog they wouldn't know about me and I wouldn't get the work. Blogs are fantastic at helping you build your personal brand and therefore can help you make much more money than you ever will make from advertising.
